Subaru’s heavyweight, the WRX STI, is still recovering from having its thunder stolen thanks to the recent addition of the BRZ. In today’s installment of Video of the Day, sister publication Motor Trend takes the 2012 Subaru WRX STI out for a spin in the latest episode of Ignition to prove it hasn’t lost a step. Host Carlos Lago shows how the WRX STI was Subaru’s fun sports car way before the BRZ came to fruition by taking the hatchback down an array of serpentine roads. There’s even a little homage paid to the now-defunct Subaru World Rally Championship team as Lago gets the WRX STI a little dirty.
Besides the normal test paces, Lago shows how the WRX STI packs the biggest punch for the money by demonstrating the hatchback’s versatility. Not only can the WRX STI hug corners and go fast in a straight line but it can also swallow up a lot of cargo. Lago and company lay out all of the production equipment necessary to make the latest episode of Ignition and then stuff it all neatly into the back of the hatchback. After, it was decided the WRX STI was too clean so Lago takes the hatchback off-road to a familiar place for Subaru; a dirt track. Like Lago states in the video below, the WRX STI has a particular set of skills, skills that make it one of the most well-rounded vehicles on the road today.
