Hydrogren Cars ready for Mainstream. Need Stations

So, what came first, the chicken or the egg? The people who are trying to give us the hydrogen car is caught on a similar paradox. Auto makers like General Motors who have been in the process of developing hydrogen powered vehicles are saying that they can come up with those types of cars but the problem is with the infrastructure that is needed to distribute the hydrogen.

So GM is pushing for said infrastructure to be developed. The company’s research and development chief Larry Burns is on a campaign to get the energy companies to come onboard. He is challenging the energy companies to create a network of fueling stations in major metropolitan areas starting with Los Angeles.

It is said that a network consisting of 12,000 hydrogen stations would put 70 percent of the U.S. population within two miles of a fueling station. It is believed that such a network would cost about $24 billion to create.

Burns will be lobbying the energy companies and local, state and federal governments to come up with the funds to build the network.

Some major car makers already have some form of a hydrogen fuel cell car on the road. These companies include Honda, with its FCX Clarity; BMW and its Hydrogen 7; and Ford with its modified Focus. And General Motors is currently involved in Project Driveway which has distributed 100 hydrogen vehicles to businesses, public figures and John Q. Public in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and New York. Burns has said that early feedback from drivers of these vehicles have been very good.
