Personalized license plates, or vanity plates, are a relatively inexpensive way to express one’s individualism. However, you may want to verify the words spelled or even the letter combinations don’t have a special meaning to the boys (and girls) in blue. The problem is that such combinations are abbreviations recognized by a police department systems’ to represent certain citations. Nick Vautier’s vanity plate “NV” means “Not Visible”. When an officer submitted an NV for any vehicle,Vautier’s vehicle also popped up and he was issued a ticket.
Other vanity plates that generated tickets included “XXX” (for “No Plate”) and, of course, “NO PLATE”.
Our take? Keep the plate given to you by the DMV and get a customized license plate frame (pictured) instead.
