How Tata Nano can cost over $200,000

Hey, wait a minute! we thought the Nano was priced at $2,000 to $2,500! What’s this about $220,000? A company in Mumbai, India named D.C. Design will be constructing its own version of the Nano. And only the car’s silhouette will remain. Everything else will go or change.

For example, the car will have a 1600cc engine instead of the standard two-cylinder 624cc engine. The back seats will be removed to make room for the larger engine and the car will also be equipped with new brakes and suspension and larger 20-inch wheels. It needs the larger wheels because it will have a top speed of 124 miles per hour.

Some elements of the upscale Nano will be customized for customers. For example, they will have a choice of colors and trims. But the technology of the vehicle will not be changed. Execs at D.C. Design said that there will be a lot of high tech goodies in the car — a lot of IT type equipment.

The company expects to build about two to five of the more luxury version of the Nano each year. It plans to sell the car to wealthy Indians who have a passion for cars. Watch for the first prototype to appear in about March 2010.
