No, we’re not talking about Ellen’s wife, anything triple-X, or alcohol in our Google-catching title. As the consumer-oriented, bronze-medal winner of the Motor Trend Automotive Group triad, we also cover subject matters dear to the car enthusiast heart, namely thrust, handling, and the proper use of the all-important stick (shift). This time, car shopper and enthusiast interests meet in, oddly enough, the world of hybrid vehicles.

Porsche has just announced that its 918 Spyder prototype will be draped in Martini colors. Martini Racing was Porsche’s official partner back in the 70′s, and the distinctive red, navy blue, and cerulean on a Porsche body continue to send fan boys drooling over their keyboards. Of more consumer interest is what’s found beneath the Spyder’s skin. The Porsche 918 Spyder prototype is powered by a 4.6-liter V-8 engine coupled with two distinctive electric motors. Though the hybrid technology’s geared towards the racetrack, Porsche and owner Volkswagen will be looking for more practical applications in the next gen Porsche and VW hybrids. That’s definitely a win-win for car shoppers, who want the miles; enthusiasts, who want the power; and the automaker, who wants to meet EU and US emission and fuel economy regulations.

Automotive.com’s take: Take a look at the images. Select them to make them bigger. Salivate. Then head on over to silver-medal holder Automobile Magazine to get more details on the Porsche 918 Spyder prototype. Bring tissues.
