While everyone reported on a unified auto industry opposing the latest fuel efficiency requirements, Honda was in the shadows paying for lobbyists to push legislation calling for improvements in mileage and safety, and recognizing environmental concerns.The auto industry had previously opposed a Senate fuel standard, while simultaneously supporting a House standard which was less stringent.

President Bush signed into legislation a law that will require a 40 percent increase in fuel mileage by 2020 to 35 mpg.

Our Take? Honda played to its strengths.
