Honda S2000 CR To Debut At New York Auto Show

20006 Honda S2000 Left

The Honda S2000 is one of the company’s few models that reveals its racing origins. The roadster, when it went on sale in 1999 as a 2000 model, was eagerly received by the enthusiasts’ community for its high-revving engine, sporty driving and handling, up-to-date technology, all for less than $35,000 MSRP. According to Motor Trend blog, Honda will unveil an upgraded version of the S2000, called the S2000 CR, at this year’s New York Auto Show. The automaker, unfortunately, has released few details of this variant, though MT blog speculates it will come with an even more powerful engine.

Competitors have been few: the BMW Z4 and Porsche Boxster at the high-end of the price range and the Mazda MX-5/Miata.

Until now.

Our take? We find it interesting that Honda will be releasing such a variant especially with keen interest in its more profitable products like the upcoming all-new Honda sedan and its various fuel-cell vehicles. We suspect that the automaker may be jumping on the roadster “powertrain”, which resurged with the introduction of the Pontiac Solstice and its Saturn Sky sibling. Honda may be looking to avoid rival Toyota’s growing reputation as an “old and stuffy” car company by emphasizing that it, too, has youthful, sporty vehicles.
