Unlike other automakers, Honda has taken the next big step on fuel cell development by actually making the vehicles available to the public. The company plans to lease as many as 200 fuel cell cars to U.S. consumers during the next three years. About 50,000 people have contacted the Honda website showing interest in leasing the car — an FCX Clarity sedan.
It is expected that the leases will begin in Los Angeles in July, with first leasees ti be announced in June.
Potential leasees must live in or near Santa Monica, Torrance or Irvine, California. The lease will be $600 a month and leasees are expected to use the vehicle as their primary mode of transportation for three years.
Honda’s program is the largest commitment by a car manufacturer in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
Honda also announced that it plans to increase sales of hybrids by as much as 9 times.
