Honda, Acura Take Top Honors in ALG’s Residual Value Awards

2013 Honda Accord

Automotive value tracker ALG has announced its lists for the automakers and their cars with the highest residual values for 2012. Honda and Acura sit at the top of their respective lists for mainstream and premium brands for the first time in several years in ALG’s study, showing that there’s still life in ol’ Honda just yet. Second place in the mainstream category was Hyundai; Infiniti took the runner-up spot among premium makes.

According to ALG, residual value takes “quality, durability, and brand desirability” into account, as well as the laws of supply and demand. If an automaker has oversaturated the market with fleet sales to rental-car agencies and municipalities, secondhand values are going to suffer. There’s a tight balance between keeping demand high and balancing how many cars need to be sold to be profitable.

Among individual car winners, Toyota took the highest number with the Scion FR-S, Toyota Prius C, FJ Cruiser, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra, Land Cruiser, Lexus GS 350, and Lexus LS 460. Honda took top honors with the Honda Fit, Accord, Odyssey, and Acura RDX.
