October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the pink ribbons, pins, t-shirts, and other attire honoring those who have been affected are as inescapable as too-soon Christmas decorations at the mall. HerHighway.com, a team of all-female automotive journalists, is taking the fight with breast cancer a step further with the Driving Breast Cancer Awareness.
It’s estimated that 230,480 new women will be stricken with breast cancer this year according to the American Cancer Society. On top of that, nearly 1 million more women will undergo procedures to combat the cancer, making it tough to participate in walks and other cancer awareness events. This driving event was held to honor those people who are recovering from surgery and can’t partake in more physically strenuous activities. HerHighway.com editor-in-chief Christina Selter is one of those women still affected by cancer, but she still came along for the ride snapping a few pictures here and there.
The route started near the famous Santa Monica Pier, traveled up the Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu, CA. and back to the pier again. Several manufacturers supported the event by providing vehicles, such as an Acura TSX wagon, Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300, Fiat 500, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda CR-Z. The Santa Monica police department also escorted the drivers to the starting point, with the fire department waiting with pink breast cancer awareness t-shirts upon returning.
This year’s drive only went a few miles up the Pacific Coast Highway and back, but next year’s event plans to go a little further: Almost 100 participants have already signed up and will start off in Los Angeles driving across the country to New York City.
