On the latest episode of Head to Head, our colleague Jason Cammisa of sister publication Automobile Magazine gets behind the wheel of both the 2012 Volkswagen Golf R and 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR. Both vehicles are put to the test on both roads and the racetrack alike as Cammisa makes his way through Southern California. The U.S. variant of the Golf R has been detuned ever-so-slightly from its European sibling but still makes a respectable 256 horsepower. It’s routed through a six-speed manual transmission. The Lancer Evo MR, on the other hand, holds the reigns to 291 horsepower and costs $8,000 more than the Golf R.
It doesn’t take long to tell which vehicle Cammisa prefers as he manhandles each around Willow Springs Motorsports Park. Cammisa commands the Lancer Evo MR to slide all over the track while the Golf R doesn’t quite have that ability as he later discovers. As usual, the Lancer Evo MR is chaffed about its steep price tag and the lack of an interior while the Golf R is praised for the exact opposite reason. Like Cammisa states at the beginning of the comparison, people’s feelings for both cars are usually discovered at an early age. Which one do you prefer, the Volkswagen Golf R or the Mitsubishi Lancer MR? Sound off in the comment section and be sure to check out the video below.
