Überholprestige. Yeah, that’s German, and it means something more than the gobbledygook you’re reading if you don’t understand the language. Basically, it means “outta my way” on the Autobahn when a fast-moving car is barnstorming behind you. Some cars have it; some cars don’t. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S and 2014 BMW M5 Competition Package have it in spades.
Both cars represent the ultra-powerful versions of their mid-range luxury sedans. The Mercedes packs 577 horsepower from a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 engine and routes it through a modified conventional seven-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. The BMW is an uprated and upgraded version of the M5, pushing 575 horsepower to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
But forget all those numbers. Both cars are severely underrated in the power they make. And they’re surprisingly similar in the performance they produce. But which is better?
Motor Trend’s Jonny Lieberman and Michael Shaffer put the two super sedans through their paces to see for themselves. Catch the action for yourself in the video below.
