General Motors plans to build a new 138,000 sq. ft. test wing expected to be completed during the later half of 2014. The plan will invest $200 million into the company’s Global Powertrain Engineering Headquarters as part of the previously announced commitment to invest $1.5 billion in North American facilities in 2013.
The consolidation of work being done at different locations outside of the Pontiac campus will help reduce development timing for GM’s next-generation advanced propulsion technologies. The expansion will also add around 400 jobs to Pontiac’s campus.
“These moves will help our entire Powertrain team work more effectively across the organization to develop the powertrain technologies we need to build the world’s best vehicles for our customers around the world,” stated Sam Winegarden, GM vice president of Global Engine Engineering.
Not only does the company plan to expand, there will be a significant move by 2014. The Performance Build Center that builds the Corvette Z06 and ZR1, along with the Camaro ZL1, will be moving to GM’s Chevrolet Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, KY, from where it is now at the Wixom facility in Michigan.
GM’s Powertrain Development Center is one of the largest and most technically advanced powertrain development centers in the world. The new test wing will be used by the engineers who bring advanced, fuel-saving powertrains to the market faster and cheaper because of the cut development time. State-of-the-art facilities allow the engineer to test all engines under extreme conditions, from cold temperatures to repetitive starting and stopping, ensuring durability, reliability, and quality.
Most of the work conducted at the Wixom facility will be transferred to Pontiac by the middle of 2015. Another relocation to take place during 2015 will be GM’s R&D Propulsion Systems Research Lab to Pontiac campus.
