Geneva Preview: Hyundai Teases New Design Language and Goofy Name With i-oniq Concept

Hyundai is previewing a new concept car for the Geneva Motor Show next March, and in typical understated and artsy form, they’ve released a moody profile sketch and a silly name: “i-oniq.”

The name “i-oniq” (trendy lowercases and all) combines the sensibilities of an air purifier designed by Apple and hawked in a Skymall catalog. The concept itself was designed and built at Hyundai’s European center in Rüsselsheim, Germany. Hyundai promises that the concept will preview the company’s future design language, which will be an evolution of the Sonata’s flowing lines.

Designer Thomas Bürkle said of the concept, “Two strong arched curves define the silhouette of i-oniq, creating a playful contrast between the sharp character lines and soft but muscular features.” We think it looks like a computer mouse from the early 2000s. But hey, that’s why we’re snarky journalists instead of designers.

Expect to see the full concept at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in the first week of March, silly name and all. At least it’s not a boy named Sue.
