Electric motors and drive units for electric vehicles have been mostly imports until now. But that changed when General Motors began production of these parts for the Chevrolet Spark EV at its White Marsh plant in Baltimore.
GM engineers have designed and developed the motor of the Spark to provide maximum efficiency and power, all the while retaining its reliability. The motor’s unique design provides precise delivery of its 30 horsepower, enabling the Chevrolet Spark EV to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than eight seconds. This summer, the Spark EV will be sold in California and Oregon, with Canada, Europe, and South Korea to start selling the EV later this year.
“The era of using electricity to help improve performance and fuel economy is already here and the trend is only going to grow. Today is further proof GM is leading in the development of electric vehicles that will improve America’s energy security,” said Mike Robinson, GM vice president of Sustainability in a recent interview.
Production of the electric motors began in White Marsh in Baltimore. Employees completed an intensive training course to operate the machinery required to build the parts of the electric motor and drive units. Even now, gas-powered vehicles use electric motors to power seats, windows, and windshield wipers, among other functions, so the jump from building an electric motor that moves a small part of the vehicle to one that moves the entire vehicle was not too difficult.
