Full-size Hybrids get a Following

Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning chose the Escalade hybrid to be his reward for becoming MVP. Sen. John Kerry has traded in his Escape hybrid for the new Tahoe hybrid, apparently on the merits of its having won an environmental “green car of the year” award. Paris Hilton of, well, she’s well known as well for some reason and she, too, has decide that a full size hybrid SUV in the guise of a Tahoe will be her next ride.

Our take? Who knows what Paris Hilton is thinking when she purchases a Tahoe hybrid. Eli, well he’d a big guy at 6′ 6” so it’s understandable that he’d drive the roomiest car in Cadillac’s lineup.

But for Sen. Kerry, an apparent long time environmentalist and proponent of fuel-economy increases for auto manufacturers, you’d think his “knowledge” on the subject matter would mean he’d be more cynical of “green car of the year” award for a 3 ton SUV that at best will barely break the 20 mpg barrier. If the decision was driven by the desire for an SUV then the RX400h from Lexus is more efficient still, and no doubt will be able to do everything that would be asked of the Tahoe as well.

Granted relative to many of its competitors are less efficient, but any number of cars and wagons will easily eclipse the 20 mpg mark. More significantly, the amount of energy and resources that goes into making a (relatively) smaller car or wagon are significantly less.

Really, he should have just said that he wanted a large SUV, and the hybrid one happened to be the least harmful to the environment. Don’t tout how “green” it is when any number of conventionally powered autos are greener still.

No wonder the Europeans laugh at us.
