Ah, the venerable Ford Crown Victoria, that staple of taxis, fleets, and police, we wish we could say we’ll miss.
But we don’t, and neither does the buying public. Ford, reluctantly, has acknowledge the trend. According to the Free Press, Ford has stopped selling the Crown Victoria to the public, claiming around 80,000 models remaining on dealer lots nationwide.
No more models will be delivered to dealers.
The Crown Victoria will continue to be sold in bulk to fleet customers. Many local governments also rely on the car as a police cruiser.
As an alternative to the Crown Victoria, Ford will be nudging retail buyers toward the Taurus (formerly the Five Hundred), Fusion, and the all-new Focus.
Our take? The first Crown Victoria rolled on the roads in the mid-Fifties and while a venerable machine, too little investment and overwhelming competition has relegated it as a favorite of the police and the elderly. While we won’t be surprised if Ford drops the model entirely in the near future, we also wouldn’t be surprised if it came back in some new form. (And, no, that’s not a hint of exclusive press knowledge. Yet.)
