Ford Recalls Fiesta For Side Airbag Deployment Issues

2011 Ford Fiesta

Exactly 154,604 Ford Fiestas are being recalled for their side airbags, because they may not protect against a side impact.

It turns out that if the Fiesta gets hit on the side, the side curtain airbag for the passenger won’t deploy if the seat doesn’t detect a passenger in it. Makes sense, right? Except the side curtain airbags run the full length of the car’s interior, so those sitting in the rear will still get injured when the airbag doesn’t deploy.

It’s a bit of simple software programming: alter the code so that the side airbags will deploy regardless if the seat sensors detect anyone there. Ford will do so for free, beginning shortly; a start date hasn’t been announced yet. As always, Fiesta owners can contact Ford at (866) 436-7332, while citing recall campaign number 12C26.
