Not content to merely keep the Mustang architecture to its own model line (witness the recent news surrounding the Lincoln MKR concept car, also built on a stretched ’Stang body), Ford has introduced the Ford Interceptor at this month’s North American Internataional Auto Show in Detroit.
Although at first glance the name might suggest a police cruiser whose main job is to chase after perps (conjuring up images of Generic Sedan with Lightbar, à la the styling of the long-in-the-tooth Crown Victoria), this is actually one rakish-looking concept. The only glaring hint to its lineage is the shaker cowl on the hood, reminiscent of recent Mustangs; otherwise, the air is of a Dodge Charger or Chrysler 300, but in Ford guise (the high beltline evokes the ’30s gangster-car feel of the Daimler Chrysler siblings).
Ford’s by-now-signature “Gillette razor” grille is here modified slightly by having the first two “blades” be much wider than the bottom third “blade,” which distinguishes it from the other cars in the Ford stable.
Ford’s design director, Peter Horbury, said that the Ford Interceptor concept “has the soul of Mustang,” it combines the “Built Ford Tough” attitude “with the sporty elegance of ’60s Ford sedans.” If you think you’ve seen this kind of approach before, Horbury said, you have. “We’ve translated the design language of last year’s F-250 Super Chief pickup concept onto a car.”
No word on whether an Interceptor will make it to production, however.
Our take? Ford has taken its design language from the truck (where it was quite over the top) and applied it successfully to this Mustang offspring. We could certainly see this garnering a lot of attention if Ford decided to actually produce this car.
