Ford Fusion Hybrid: America’s Most Efficient Sedan

2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid

The Ford Fusion is America’s most efficient sedan, says Ford, unsurprisingly.

Like the C-MAX Hybrid, the Ford Fusion Hybrid returns 47s across the board: 47 mpg in highway, city, and combined driving. This tops the official rating of the Camry Hybrid by 40/38 city/highway, and the Volkswagen Passat TDI. In fact, only dedicated hybrids like the Prius (at 51/48) gets more; the Fusion even ekes out more miles than the Honda Insight.

Of course, those cars compete on a different level, respectively. The Fusion splashes in the middle of the midsize sedan segment, a growing, contentious field with new competitors entering every day. Honda is set to release an Accord Hybrid alongside its plug-in and conventional-engined models. And while the Hybrid Fusion takes all the fame, the regular Fusion returns on average 22 or 25 mpg city, 34-37 mpg highway, and an average combined mpg of 26 or 29, split among three engines. In fact, the most efficient 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine gets less mileage than the new Nissan Altima or Honda Accord, by a few miles.

This is splitting hairs, of course. Time will tell if Ford’s Ecoboosted, exclusively four-cylinder lineup will play well against the Accord and Camry, the titans of the segment who stick with V-6 engines. Likewise with the Hyundai/Kia twins, and the Volkswagen Passat. But for now, the Hybrid claims the top rung in the ever-growing mileage peeing contest.
