Ford Freestyle Lunging Catches NHTSA Attention

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration has announced it will be investigating consumer complaints of select Ford Freestyle SUVs “lunging”, or accelerating suddenly and unexpectedly.

According to the Detroit Free Press, consumers claim the full-size SUV would lunge up to ten feet whenever their foot was not on the accelerator or firm on the brakes. The issue seemed to worsen if the HVAC was active or the steering wheel was turned to a high degree.

Approximately 170,000 vehicles may be affected by the issue, model years 2005 through 2007. The NHTSA reports there have been 18 accidents reported that may be related to the issue with one resulting in a minor injury. Ford is fully cooperating with the agency states a spokesperson for the company.
