Ford: Escaping a Cold Gray World for the LA Auto Show?

2011 Ford Vertrek Driving

Ford released philosophical details this morning of its new color palette, but one non-snoozy detail in the presser confirmed that the all-new, completely-redesigned, blow your socks off Ford Escape will be unveiled at the LA Auto Show in November.

For now, details are scarce. Earlier this week, we learned that Ford pulled the plug on a hybrid model and is instead going to market with a variety of four-cylinder engines, including 1.6- and 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engines. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost rates 28 mpg highway in the Explorer, and the 1.6-liter could almost certainly do better, while both feature the power of a larger engine. The new Escape is expected to bear a close resemblance to the Ford Vertek concept (shown) that debuted earlier this year at the Detroit auto show. We’ll find out how close the two are in a couple of weeks.

In the meantime, we learned that the new Escape will be unveiled in a new Ginger Ale color, “a classic gold-neutral with slight green undertones found in rocks and minerals.”

So, if you always thought that designers just slapped on a color and sent it to the dealership, you’re wrong. And with a rebounding economy (HAHAHAHAHAHAHA), some designers are looking for fresh color ideas compared to flat and dreary colors that dominated during the recession.

“The technology available today has given us so many more options,” said Susan Swek, chief designer, Color & Material Design. “We are able to manipulate color, and play with the tones and shades and do absolutely remarkable things.”

Look for Ford to unveil Kodiak Brown and Frosted Glass in a showroom near you–soon!
