At long last, the Fisker Atlantic has made its official debut before the start of the 2012 New York Auto Show. Promising to bring concept car-like styling, new plug-in hybrid technology, and coachbuilt touches to the well-to-do masses, the Atlantic is intended to be Fisker’s first foray into the world of mainstream manufacturing.
About the size of the 2012 Audi A5 coupe, the Fisker Atlantic is aimed at young families with money who want to drive “green” and are tired of their Priuses. Using the second generation of EVer (electric vehicle with extended range) technology that debuted in the 2012 Fisker Karma sedan, the Atlantic should be a little more refined in concept and execution—and more affordable, too. Current estimates peg the Fisker Atlantic in the neighborhood of $50,000. But then again, the Karma was originally intended to be sold for under $80,000 in the mid-2000s when it was being developed. It’s on the market now for $107,000.
The Fisker Atlantic will be available with standard rear-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. Fisker notes that it will have a gas-powered engine serving as an on-board generator for the electric motor that will power the wheels when battery power runs out, but the gas engine will never directly run the car. That engine is expected to be a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder sourced from BMW that should be good for 240 horsepower.
Up top, the Atlantic uses what the automaker calls a ridged “spider” structure to provide a moonroof look outward, the protection of a hardtop, and enough headroom for rear-seat passengers. On the outside, headlights and tail lights each have LED elements embedded in them, but the rear lights are split as to make for a bigger trunk space opening. The look is reminiscent of the Karma, but smaller and sharper.
Fisker has not pinned a date of sale on the Atlantic, as it’s still a working prototype of a future production car. The automaker has experienced some hiccups in the past few months, but company CEO Tom LaSorda says the Fisker Atlantic is a “critical milestone” in reaching mainstream status alongside the BMWs and Audis of the world.
