First Drive: 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe

2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe Frozen Brown Front Quarter

It’s a sedan. No, it’s a coupe. No, the 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe is a little bit of both, a splash of cold water to the face of convention.

New for 2013, the “Gran Coupe” name graces the 315-horsepower 640i Gran Coupe first, followed by the V-8 650i Gran Coupe in rear- and all-wheel drive a little later. Like the name implies, it’s mostly based on the 6 Series coupe, albeit lengthened and stretched upward a bit to accommodate an extra set of doors. But it’s not all carryover, as the Gran Coupe borrows its seatbelt-integrated front buckets from the 6 Series convertible and pulls a unique front bumper and some rear-end touches all for itself.

But is it worth it? At $76,895, it’s some $2,500 more than a standard 640i coupe. But with options—and believe us, our car came with nearly all of them, including a $5,000 Opal White Merino leather interior package exclusive to the Gran Coupe—it tipped right over top of the $100,000 mark. It’d have to be one heck of a car to justify that price.
