File another vehicle or engine away in the “not coming to America” queue. The Porsche Cayenne S Diesel is set to enter the European market with a new twin-turbo 4.2-liter V-8 diesel engine which is rated at 375 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, more than any other Cayenne available anywhere today. Did we mention the American market won’t get this version of the Cayenne? Because it won’t.
The current American Cayenne boasts a 4.8-liter V-8 gasoline engine which churns out 500 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. While America also has a Cayenne diesel as well, its 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine is rated at just 240 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Even with the smaller mill, Porsche claims the American Cayenne diesel has a 745-mile cruising range., but Porsche also claims that the engine note on the Cayenne is similar to that of all other vehicles in its portfolio.
Our in-house colleagues over at Motor Trend recently drove the Cayenne Diesel destined for our shores, and reported that it was similar to its European sibling. “If you plan to use your new Porsche SUV not as a stoplight bazooka but for, you know, actual SUV things, the oil-burner is about perfect,” said Arthur St. Antoine, who recently drove the American Cayenne Diesel. “Put simply, the Cayenne Diesel is one of the best SUVs on the market today.”
The European-spec Cayenne Diesel S comes standard with a start/stop feature, and Porsche offers a complimentary course that helps customers acclimate to their new ride. What say you?
