We get to drive a lot of cars, but sometimes it’s the ones we don’t get to drive that entrench themselves in the deep recesses of our conscious-pulsing-car-loving-insides. This limited-to-333 total to be produced, top of the line Audi A1 Quattro, is one such example.
In America our most diminutive Audi comes in the not-so-small A3 variety. In Europe, a continent where just about everything is smaller in size, the popular A1 wears the crown of the mini’s. And, the newest A1 due out in the summer of 2012, will take a stab at just that: The finest of the mini’s, the Mini Cooper. Both cars deliver style and fun on a small scale. Not the undistinguished econoboxes that mosey among the weeds of the bottom-of-the-range, these cars are more brazen and proud, and even more fun, too.
The 2013 Audi A1 Quattro packs a lot of bounce-per-ounce, with 256-horsepower, and enough low-end thrust to have us purring. The 2.0-liter engine is both direct injected—meaning just the right amount of gasoline is inserted into the cylinder, allowing for maximum efficiency—and turbocharged. The all-wheel-drive A1 does a 0-60 mph time in the 5.5 second range, and gets about 27 miles to the gallon.
Baring the Audi nameplate, the tiniest model receives the royal treatment: Nappa leather for the S-line sport seats and armrests, along with contrasting read seams and stitching; abundant Quattro badges and lots of gloss and aluminum; xenon headlights and LED’s inside; light and rain sensor; Audi’s MMI navigation with Bluetooth and Google Earth; fourteen speakers that blast you with 465 watts of power; and a whole heck of a lot more.
Aficionados of German engineering, little sports car enthusiasts, and greedy Euros can rejoice, while we scowl through binoculars across the pond.
