The Electronics Entertainment Expo is the largest convention of its kind, with more than 80,000 people in the video game and movie industries converging upon Downtown Los Angeles to see what’s what among the latest technology. Unlike the Consumer Electronics Show we attend in Las Vegas, E3, as it’s known to the public, is solely for lighting your childish fancy with things and go zoom and explode on-screen–not the latest in high-tech washers and dryers (We’re looking at you, LG).
Here are the biggest car-related highlights we’ve seen thus far from the madness that is E3.
Mario Kart 8
Yes. Double yes. Yes and a spikey blue shell. This looks to be a return to form for the Mario Kart franchise, retaining the same competitive spirit that made us pick up our SNES and Nintendo 64 controllers all those years ago. The new game looks to have a few more rides, including dirt bikes and hovercrafts. Mario Kart 8 will bring back all of your favorite characters from the Mario franchise to the Wii U, except they’ll now be competing on racetracks, walls, ceilings, and wherever their vehicles can go. We can’t wait to try it.
Gran Turismo 6
Nissan Deltawing! Tesla Model S! Zagato Alfa Romeo! Renault Alpine! Maybe it’s just me getting a little giddy, but it’s hard not to when only the sixth Gran Turismo video game graces our presence in 15 years. The video game designers took a whole new approach at the gaming franchise to make it look more realistic than ever, from the suspensions of each car undulating to tires having a new sense of physics. In the two and a half minutes we saw, we swooned. We guffawed. We wondered why we didn’t see any Porsche models–maybe the automaker still hasn’t signed on with Polyphony. This game should be incredible.
Forza Motorsport 5
Not to be outdone by Gran Turismo, Microsoft’s Forza series just showed off its fifth iteration. While its video was far less technical, the Xbox’s Forza 5 ought to give it a run for the money. What we know about it so far: Nothing was broken, so Forza didn’t have much to improve. Also, there are Porsches in this game. That has to count for something. Once again, color us excited.
Need for Speed movie
One thing we’re not excited for is the Need for Speed movie. Read more about it here. Just make it stop. Please make it stop.
