The neon-bright Ford Focus ST is the sporty Focus enthusiasts have been waiting on for months now. And now that its starting price has been announced, Ford hopes they’ll be lining up dealerships with the same enthusiasm.
And the figure you’ve all been enthusiastically anticipating is: $24,495, before destination, taxes, registration, and all that other fun stuff. Starting at around $24,000? And you thought the Fiat 500 Abarth was the pocket-rocket bargain of the century.
At least the Fiat 500 Abarth is still be a dedicated follower of fashion, though the Focus ST isn’t exactly a mongrel itself. It’s got Ford’s sharp new Aston-aping grille, blacked-out and gaping like a particularly hungry sea dweller. It will have a spoiler, 18-inch Y-shaped alloy wheels, a center-mounted exhaust, grippy Recaro seats, and plenty of ST badges to remind you that you’re not in the Focus Electric. And if you buy it in a boring color like silver, Alan Mulally will come over to your house and stomp on your daisy garden.
And if you’re wondering what’s powering this pocket sled, the Focus ST has a turbocharged, direct-injection 2.0-liter Ecoboost engine, good for 247 horsepower and what Ford promises to be “acres of peak torque: 250 lb-ft worth, to be precise.” That’s more than the Abarth’s 160 horsepower, if you’re keeping score, for a far roomier car to boot.
And yes, Ford’s ST will come with the latest SYNC and MyFord Touch, in case the exhaust note becomes too boring. Ford dealers are taking orders on the Focus ST now, and the car will be available in the summer.
