The 2013 Scion FR-S is one of the most anticipated cars of the new Yyear, and Cartel Customs has just finished a one-off convertible roadster version, the first of its kind. The Cartel FR-S Speedster will do parade laps during the opening ceremonies of the Long Beach Grand Prix this coming weekend. Custom builders and tuners have tinkered with Scion’s cars for years, and by gauging early sentiments surrounding the rear-wheel-drive sports coupe, we expect to see plenty more custom FR-S models.
The Cartel roadster version features a lower windshield and sloping side windows, much like the Scion xB Cartel did a while back. Cartel opted not to use a body kit, but did add custom fenders, and an “86″ carbon-fiber wing, a nod to the Toyota AE86 Corolla. As Scion vice president Jack Hollis has mentioned, AE86 served as the basis for the new FR-S. Custom paint, an upgraded clutch, custom exhaust and suspension, and the full interior treatment complement the Speedster. While this version is a one-off, there has been frenzied speculation about an FR-S roadster version. While new safety requirements would require some adjustments for rollover protection, and a roadster produced with any scale wouldn’t have all the aftermarket treatment, this could be an initial view into what a topless FR-S might look like.
