Audi has been mentioning possible new Q crossovers and SUVs in the past several months to compete with rival German luxury automaker BMW, and the expanding market in general; now new details are emerging to give us a clearer picture as to what the Q future lineup could look like. According to a report on Automobile Magazine‘s website, Audi is looking to cram at least seven different Q vehicles into the range. The automaker currently produces the Audi Q5 crossover and the larger Audi Q7 SUV, and has previously announced plans to make a Q6 and Q3 to compete with the BMW X6 and BMW X3. But it appears that’s just the beginning.
Making eight different crossovers and SUVs would seem excessive, would offer to small a differentiation from one to the next, and could possibly eat other’s sales, but Audi seems to have considered all of this. The idea is to create two lines of crossovers—an odd-numbered series, and an even-numbered series—and the two would in theory be vastly different. The odd numbered Qs, the Audi Q3, Q5, and Q7, would have an outdoor, off-road character. By contrast, the even numbered Q2, Q4, Q6, and Q8 would be more sleek, and would be more tuned for the city. Audi is embarking on its new Q strategy beginning in 2014 with the new Audi Q7. Other models such as the new Q3 and Q6 are expected later in the decade. We’re curious to see if Audi will go through with the crossover-heavy strategy, and even more curious to see if there’s a market and enough room for all those Qs.
