Don’t discard anything! You never know if it will be the catalyst to some kind of amazing technological breakthrough.
Fungus (you know, that icky green stuff found outside or, worse, on your foot), is the latest in the saga of using strange substances for the creation of alternative fuel. Some might say, "ooh, gross." But according to Israel21c, Dr. Amir Sharon of Tel Aviv University, has discovered that a certain fungus can be used to actually convert the toughest parts of plants into bioethanol. It has been tested to already break down the stalks and leaves of corn. Usually only the kernels are used in the creationg of ethanol. This makes the process of using corn more efficient with little, if any, waste.
More details can be found in the link above. Our take? If this, as well as other technologies in converting corn into ethanol take hold, the U.S. "bread basket" could literally fuel all future American vehicles cheaply while still feeding our fat…er…healthly appetites.
