Nominees for the 63rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this week and the auto industry is accounted for with three nominations in the “Outstanding Commercial” category. Chrysler, Nissan, and Subaru all received nods for their respective ad spots. Old Spice, American Express, and McDonalds rounded out the nominations for the category.
Chrysler’s “Imported from Detroit” two-minute commercial first aired during this year’s Super Bowl. The commercial showcases the city of Detroit. Adding to the edge Chrysler is looking to capture, Detroit native and rapper Eminem steps out of the new Chrysler 200 endorsing the vehicle while his music plays in the background.
Nissan is represented with a 60-second spot showing a polar bear walking through modern day suburbia. In the commercial, the polar bear begins to notice its arctic habitat is melting away (presumably because of global warming). Nissan ends the ad with an owner of the automaker’s electric vehicle, the Leaf, coming face-to-face with the giant bear as it sneaks up from in front of the car. The bear stands up on its back legs and wraps its arms around the tense owner, giving him a hug for caring about the environment.
The third nominated automaker is Subaru with its 30-second spot about a baby driver. A father hands the keys of his Subaru over to his daughter, who is driving by herself for the first time. The father sees his daughter as though she is still a young child but when the daughter talks, she is portrayed as the teenager she is. The father says the reason he bought a Subaru was so his daughter would be safe on the road.
