Chinese automaker Chery takes a pause in U.S. expansion

The talk of seeing a multitude of Chinese-made vehicles in the U.S. in the very, very near future was what one would say, “jumping the gun” (or ghost-riding the whip for you youngsters.) Simply put, it ain’t going to happen because China’s car manufacturers are just not ready.
And that apparently applies to vehicles from collaborations such as Chrysler and Chinese automaker Chery. According to The Car Connection, cars manufactured by the latter for the former will be coming later.

Reason? So far, cars built by Chinese manufacturers do not meet the stringent U.S. crash test standards. To help prepare the cars, Chery is said to be building a crash test center at its engineering facilities in Wuhi, China but it won’t be ready until next year. And, perhaps in an effort to endear themselves to U.S. companies, Chery is reportedly seeking parts from well established suppliers in the U.S. and Europe to help boost its quality.

Our take? Looks like Chrysler and Chery have to go back to the drawing board. That, or Ceberus’ latest acquisition could look across the border into Mexico for much-needed quality at good prices.
