Chevrolet Monte Carlo Rides Into Sunset

2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Ss Front Left

A post over at the Automobile Magazine forums starkly reports the inevitable: General Motors is retiring its long-in-the tooth Chevy Monte Carlo coupe.
The Monte Carlo was developed back in the early 70’s. Based on the now defunct Chevrolet Chevelle, the Monte Carlo was a companion to the Pontiac Grand Prix and competed against Ford’s Thunderbird. Now it competes against the Toyota Camry Solara and Honda Accord coupe.

There have been six generations of Monte Carlo’s, most being refreshes of an older design. The current model, which debuted in 2006, tapped into the Carlo’s racing heritage.

The upcoming Camaro and Impala are considered the Carlo’s replacements, which bows out this June. Our take? While the design’s a bit dated, almost retro, the car itself is not, recommended even by Consumer Reports.

In my eyes, the Monte died the second it went to front wheel drive. :(
