The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation on both the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze compact sedan and the 2010 Jeep Wrangler SUV.
Both investigations involve vehicle fires. The NHTSA reports it has received two complaints on the Chevy Cruze igniting on fire and eight reports on the Jeep Wrangler. States one of the drivers of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze: “The car was totally engulfed within five minutes of stopping, and it was only after the first sign of fire was visible that the warning light on the dashboard illuminated.” An owner of one of the 2010 Jeep Wrangler SUVs reported a similar situation: “Once out of the Jeep I looked under it and saw an unknown liquid burning down to the ground from the engine area. I attempted to extinguish the fire with water but I was unsuccessful. Within minutes it was a total loss.”
Both General Motors, which builds the Chevrolet Cruze, and Chrysler, which builds the Jeep Wrangler, say they are fully cooperating with the NHTSA in its investigation. Both automakers say they are not aware of any injuries or fatalities associated with the issues.
Chevrolet has sold around 177,000 Cruze sedans for model year 2011 while over 130,000 Jeep Wranglers have been sold by Chrysler.
