Subaru has never been thought of as a technology magnate, despite the fact that it’s owned by Fuji Heavy Industries, a conglomerate that makes everything from steel to aerospace technology and even wind turbines. But the automaker has been consistently one-upping itself with new high-tech gadgets, and it has yet another at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Debuting this week is Starlink, a new infotainment system that Subaru designed in-house, using a collaborative team pooled from other divisions of Fuji Heavy Industries. According to the automaker, Starlink is set to “enhance connectivity and safety technology features in Subaru vehicles, while also simplifying and reducing overall cabin complexity.”
First Subaru partnered with Harman to bring Aha radio to its cars, as it debuted at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show. In Starlink, Subaru integrates Aha, which allows streaming of thousands of radio stations via satellite and the ability to select favorite programs, songs, and channels for later listening, as well as navigation, voice command, and other infotainment functions. It will also integrate with with EyeSight, Subaru’s new collision prevention technology, as part of what Subaru calls its Starlink suite.
Subaru plans to debut Starlink in the 2014 Subaru Forester, which made its North American debut at November’s Los Angeles Auto Show, when equipped with the navigation system. And the infotainment package will trickle into the Subaru Impreza, XV Crosstrek, and BRZ this summer for the 2014 model year. It will be featured as a running change midway through the 2013 model year for the Legacy and Outback, as Subaru is sure to completely redesign its midsize sedan and crossover wagon over the next year or two.
