Car Buyers like, but balk, paying for Built-In GPS Navigation, MP3 players

Car Gadgets

We Americans love gadgets. The iPod and iPhone, GPS navigation systems, internet accessibility are just examples of what turns us on. However, when it comes to gadgets in our cars, we don’t have to pay for them.
J.D. Power and Associates recently surveyed 19,000 potential buyers of a car and it found that most people were interested in navigation and infotainment systems. 67 percent of respondents wanted a navigation system in their car but that fell to 20 percent when they learned that the system would cost $1,600.

Do you think these people would be more interested in getting an OnStar or a SYNC system? Guess again. Only about one-third surveyed said they would spend the extra money. What about an MP3 player? Well, two-thirds of the participants in the survey said they wanted one, but 20 percent of them decided on an FM radio.

Our take? Consumers still view cars as transportation first, living room second. We bet consumers would change their tune if cars drove themselves, though. Imagine video while taking that trip to grandma’s house on the other side of the country….
