According to the Dayton Business Journal, General Motors has announced it is ending the production of the short-lived SUV. The Rainer first debuted in 2004, a replacement to the Oldsmobile Bravada. It joined the Rendezvous as the marque’s SUVs. Though it shared its chassis and platform with two other GM vehicles (the Chevrolet Trailblazer and the GMC Envoy), the Rainer differentiated itself with its V-8 engine, 5-passenger trim (the others had extended versions), and “QuietTuning” as befit its higher luxury rank.
The Rainer is produced at GM’s Moraine Assembly in Dayton, Ohio. GM spokesman Tom Wickham says production of other models will be increased to compensate for the Rainer’s discontinuation. He did not state which models will replace it or how the news will impact employees
The plant also produces Rainer’s Trailblazer and Envoy siblings, and the Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7x. The Buick Enclave is considered both Rainer’s and Rendezvous’ replacement.
