Buick Encore Breaks 30 mpg Highway, 25 mpg City

2013 Buick Encore Revealed at 2012 NAIAS

At 25 miles per gallon in the city, 33 mpg highway, and a combined rating of 28 mpg, Buick is claiming that its Encore petite-SUV is more efficient than the Ford Escape, Jeep Compass, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

With a six-speed automatic, the only mini-SUV that is more efficient is the Nissan Juke, which bests it in city mileage by 2 mpg. A bare-bones Mini Countryman with a stick ekes 2 mpg more out of all its ratings, and will most likely beat the Encore in the fun-to-drive department. The Tiguan gets piddling mileage in comparison, and the Escape with its 1.6-liter Ecoboost engine gets 2 less mpg in city and combined driving.

All of these cars are, by the way, available with front- and four-wheel drive. For the sake of efficiency, front-wheel drive is preferred, and most of these crossovers come with automatic-only transmissions. Expect us to really crunch the numbers when the Encore is released at the start of next year.
