Another day, another batch of 2014 Chevrolet Corvette spy photos. It’s almost not even exciting anymore. But these are different, and confirm something which nobody was doubting anyhow: There will be a Corvette Convertible.
As news goes, we’ll admit that this isn’t really universe-altering. A drop-top Corvette was a mainstay of the original car–you couldn’t even get a fixed roof until 1963–and the convertible has been a part of the modern Corvette’s lineup since the 1986 model year. However, it’s still refreshing to see the convertible being tested and developed alongside its coupe brother. From the photos, it’s obvious that the Corvette will be staying with its cloth top, rather than going with the hardtop that has become popular in high-end convertibles over the past decade.
What else do we know about the car? Not much more than we did this morning. Chevrolet will be dripping out information over the next several weeks as its builds excitement for the new car, but each spy photo adds another piece to the puzzle. For example, you’ll notice that in addition to the coupe, there’s a Porsche 911 in the background of one of the shots. Whether it’s just a lucky Porsche owner sizing up next year’s competition, or if it’s a car owned by General Motors and being used as a benchmark, we can’t be sure. But it’s a safe bet that engineers for the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette have posted photos of 911s with targets on them everywhere in their offices. The Corvette vs. 911 rivalry is one of the longest lived, and most contentious. The two cars are within a whisker of each other on racetracks, and while the Porsche easily out-classes the Chevy, the Corvette’s price advantage is measured with $10,000 bills.
But back to the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette. We will, as is our duty, continue to relay any and all information and photos we get about the upcoming car. As for those of you yearning to drop the top, rest assured, you’ll have your chance sometime next soon.
