Last week, we drove the hot, new 2013 Scion FR-S, the front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports coupe collaboration between Toyota and Subaru. It’s more than just pretty neat, we concluded, and now our office mates at sister magazine, Motor Trend, have released the newest video for its Ignition series starring the same ride.
If you, like us, can’t get enough of the FR-S, check out the video, as Carlos Lago and professional racecar driver, Randy Pobst, do some numbers crunching at the dragstrip, and on the streets of Willow Springs raceway.
We already knew that the 200-hp, 2.0-liter flat-4 would not be a burner on the dragstrip, but we were a little surprised that the FR-S managed a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds. That’s slightly better than early projections, and weirder still, it just doesn’t feel that quick. The composed platform is well-balanced and suppresses the sensation of speed…unless you’re drifting sideways!
But the fascinating thing about the Scion FR-S is that you don’t need to drive sideways to enjoy it. Lago fell in love with the shifter, saying it was “fantastic,” could be “rowed as hard as you want,” and that it responds well even to soft touches in traffic. Racer Pobst champions the Scion FR-S as “a driver’s car!” and we agree.
As for a more critical points, Lago mentioned the fake carbon-fiber dash treatments and lack of a sunroof. Watch the video, and you’ll see just how important that is to him (spoiler alert–it’s not!). Which is precisely the point: you know the car is good when the only dirt you can dig up is the look of fake carbon fiber on the dash.
As Lago mentions, the Scion FR-S just might be the “vanguard for new enthusiast cars.”
