This month showed a surprising decrease of sales in over one-third of all brands. Compared to last month, it seems as though the car sales market isn’t doing well, but in reality many brands once again broke records and continued to drive their sales numbers higher. However, this month there is not one clear victory for any brand.
Last month, both Ford and Toyota dominated the list with three cars from each brand claiming the top spot in a segment. This month, though, Toyota has two vehicles that have claimed a top spot, where Ford holds onto its three segments. February boasts a well-rounded group of cars that range from brand to brand.
Subcompact Car: Nissan Versa – 13,100 Units
For the second month in a row, the Nissan Versa claims the top spot in the subcompact category. The Versa increases its monthly sales from 10,270 in January to 13,100 in February, which is a good size difference when looking at the competitors for this car. The Versa also jumped up 28.6 percent in the amount of vehicles sold when compared with February 2012. The Ford Fiesta, Chevy Sonic, and Toyota Yaris didn’t even come close to the same number of units sold, each selling 5,015, 6,025, and 2,045, respectively. With a starting price of $11,990 and great fuel economy, what’s not to like for a subcompact car?
Compact Car: Toyota Corolla – 24,999 Units
Once again, the Toyota Corolla has beat out the competition and landed the title of Best Compact Car for February 2013. Like the Nissan Versa, the Corolla has managed to increase its monthly sales by 1,177 units. As one of the leading automakers, this comes as no surprise. Right now Toyota is even offering $500 cash back when purchasing a new Corolla. With great incentives, sales can only increase. As the economy is coming back and many recent college grads are finding jobs, the Corolla is a great choice for those on a very tight budget.
Midsize Car: Toyota Camry – 31,270 Units
Although its month-to-month sales are down from January to February, the Toyota Camry still managed to sell an impressive 31,270 units, making it number one in the midsize car segment. The competition was thousands under the selling amount of the Camry, with the Nissan Altima selling 27,725, and others selling less than that. With a competitive base price of $22,235 and an EPA estimated 25/35 mpg city/highway, the Toyota Camry is a popular choice when thinking about rising gas prices. It is also available as a hybrid, providing even more incentives to an already decent vehicle.
Minivan: Dodge Grand Caravan: 10,415 Units
This month the Dodge Grand Caravan managed to beat out the Toyota Sienna for the right to be called February’s Best-Selling Minivan. It managed to beat out the Sienna by 1,206 units sold. Right now, Dodge is offering cash allowance of $1,500 and $750 bonus cash on all new 2013 models, which makes it seem more desirable than its competitors. The Grand Caravan has a starting price of $21,195 and is available in four different trim options. With top safety scores, the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan is a popular choice for soccer moms and those wanting a little extra room.
Pickup Truck: Ford F-Series – 54,489 Units
It seems like there are no other trucks out there that can compete with the amount of sales that the Ford F-Series is able to produce month after month. This month, the truck managed to sell 7,648 more than January of this year, which is one of the largest increases in sales for February. Because all trucks are lumped under the same category ‘F-Series,’ sales for the F-150, F-250, and so on all add their numbers to one entity, enabling Ford to overwhelm the competition. Not even the Chevrolet Silverado could produce close to what Ford brings in each month.
Two-Row Crossover: Ford Escape – 24,100 Units
The Ford Escape keeps its position as February’s Two-Row Crossover leader. Staying with the trend, the Ford Escape is one of seven cars that have held the top spot in their respective segments. February sales outshine January’s 19,939 units sold by just over 4,000 units. When looking at the F-Series and now the Escape, it’s as if Ford is on a mission to outsell itself month after month. With green interior components and environmental ingenuity, the Ford Escape is a good alternative to less eco-friendly crossovers.
Three-Row Crossover: Ford Explorer – 16,586 Units
The Ford Explorer continues to be the leader of three-row crossovers with 16,586 units sold in February. Keeping with Ford’s trend, the Explorer has managed to beat its January sales by over 2,000 units sold. None of its competitors sold nearly as much as the Explorer, making Ford’s sales lead even wider. The Explorer continues to raise its sales with competitive pricing and incentive deals. There’s no doubt that this is Ford’s year, even if we are only two months in. With the way sales are going, Ford is going to keep the lead it has carved out for itself.
Luxury Sedan: Mercedes-Benz C-Class – 7,302 Units
Although it’s not as much of an increase as others, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has increased its sales for the month of February, letting it keep the top spot as this month’s luxury sedan leader. Its main competitor, the BMW 3 Series only managed to sell 6,973, just short of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The C-Class has six variations to choose from, with a model for everyone with almost any budget. The C-Class so far holds the lead, but the 4 Series will be coming out soon, and with that edition to the BMW lineup, only sales will tell.
Luxury Crossover: Lexus RX – 6,938 Units
The Lexus RX refuses to give up its title as the Luxury Crossover of the month. With over 1,500 more units sold than last month, the RX is the crossover to beat. With the right price and quality, Lexus has always been a great choice. With a comfortable interior and stylish exterior, the RX continues to deliver. Only one other vehicle even came close to the number of units sold, which was the Buick Enclave with 5,241 units sold. With Buick sales on the rise for their Enclave, we might have a different crossover up here next month. Can the Buick make up that almost 1,700 unit difference?
Sports Car/Convertible: Chevrolet Camaro – 6,171 Units
It’s official. The Chevrolet Camaro is the sports car to beat. With the help its received with the reintroduction of the 1LE Performance Package, sales have increased by 1,246 units sold in the month of February compared to January. The Camaro is the everyday person’s sports car. The Camaro is fun to drive and affordable, with a base price of only $23,345. Thanks to great fuel economy for a sports car, the Camaro continues to be the car of choice for enthusiasts and those who want to drive fast without burning through their wallet in the process.
