At the BMW dealership, said customer will soon be able to order the 2012 BMW M6, a 560-horsepower turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8-powered supercar version of its personal luxury coupe. It will come standard with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with the six-speed manual from the M5 sedan likely trickling into its options list eventually. That engine and the quick-shifting transmission will be able to rocket the M6 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph. With the M Driver’s Package that number will increase to 189 mph. None of it’s necessary in a personal luxury coupe, but the ego wins this round, too.
Much as the case with the new M5 over the previous V-10 model, fuel economy is expected to climb significantly into the low 20s on the highway. The 2012 BMW M6 will also employ start-stop fuel shutoff and its suite of Efficient Dynamics technology.
Inside the car, the M6 will come with a host of engine and throttle mapping technologies—likely to go unused for the lifetime of ownership—extract the best track performance out of the car. It is a BMW M car, after all, designed to use motorsports technology on the road while maintaining the poise of a daily driver. It will have a bespoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, sports seats, head-up display, dual-zone climate control, and plenty more luxuries to comfort the discerning driver. Coupe models will also have a contoured roof made of the lightweight carbon fiber reinforced plastic—the same material used on the upcoming i3 and i8 electric cars.
It will have standard LED headlights, night vision, and 19-inch wheels standard with BMW’s Comfort Access package, active seats, navigation system, and a Bang & Olufsen audio system available—must have options.
Because in this class, pedigree and panache reign supreme, even if all 560 horsepower are never used, at least it’s a respectable number to mention on the putting green with your coworkers. Because of ego.
