Recalls
Auto recalls are unfortunately necessary when a safety issue or other defect is discovered that may reduce the safety of a car. Then the manufacturer asks owners to return their car for repair or replacements. Car recalls limit corporation negligence liability, help avoid penalties, and prevent damaging publicity. But there’s no doubt that recalls are costly to the car manufacturer; however, they are often less costly than a lawsuit and loss of reputation. State laws regulate such issues as the cost of the recall to the car company, whether it is a compulsory or voluntary recall, and the penalties that may be imposed if there is a failure to recall. Even if a car manufacturer voluntarily initiates a recall, it still may be subject to compulsory requirements. If a consumer fails to comply with a recall by failing to dispose of the car or return it to the manufacturer, then they may be subject to a fine.
