Audi, Ford Ahead in Latest IIHS Top Safety Picks

2009 Audi Q5 Front Left Snow

German automaker Audi and U.S. carmaker Ford lead in the sedan and SUV categories in the latest IIHS “Top Safety” picks.
Among the sedans are the Audi A4, Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKZ and Mercury Milan. The SUVs include the Audi Q5, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKT, and Hyundai Tucson. The lone wagon to receive the distinction in this round of testing is the Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen.

In addition to being named “Top Safety Picks,” IIHS reports that all of the models received “Good” rollover ratings, which means that they can withstand an impact at least four times the vehicle’s weight. They also offer electronic stability control as a standard feature. To become a “Top Safety Pick,” vehicles must excel on all levels of occupant safety and offer ESC.

The news comes one week after the Institute’s announcement regarding midsize SUVs.
