Well, that was fast. Remember the 2013 Fiat 500e? We recently had a chance to get behind the wheel of the all-electric cinquento in the only place it would be available — California. However, if you are a resident of the Golden State, and were hoping to land a 500e, you’re out of luck.
“We’re pretty much sold out for the year,” said Jason Stoicevich, president and CEO of Fiat North America, speaking to Wards Auto.
The electrified 500 has reached top capacity, and in the process, has solidified Fiat’s plan to only release it in California at first to see how it performs. This move appears to have paid off only months after Stoicevich took the reins of Fiat North America from Tim Kuniskis. Stoicevich used to lead Fiat’s operations in California while Kuniskis hoped the fence to lead fellow brand mate Dodge as its president and CEO.
“It’s a huge market, import-dominated,” Stoicevich says to Wards Auto about the current status of the automotive market in California. Stoicevich went on, estimating that California accounts for 20 percent of all automotive sales in the United States. When you take into consideration that there were 38 million people living in California as of the end of 2012, that doesn’t sound too outlandish.
“The electric-car market is alive and well in California,” Stoicevich says to Wards Auto. Stoicevich, and by extension, Fiat, recognize this by setting up 28 “studios” in California. That’s more than 10 percent of the 205 total Fiat dealerships located in the United States.
