The company, well known for its safety innovations, is now working on technology that is meant to save pedestrians.
The new technology automatically stops a car from hitting a pedestrian at speeds of up to 16 miles per hour. It includes a camera behind the rearview mirror and a radar unit behind the front grille of the car.
The radar can monitor a 60 degree field 500 feet to 650 feet down the road. The camera, on the other hand, has a 45 degree field of view and can see objects 160 feet ahead of the car. The camera and radar are on as long as the car is moving.
The system will be introduced in the 2011 Volvo S60. Volvo and Delphi worked together for 10 years to develop it.
