Nissan challenges Chevy Volt on MPG, Car Prices

With much fan fair, General Motors announced on August 11 that the Environmental Protection Agency will be giving the Chevrolet Volt a fuel economy rating of 230-mpg.

No doubt this is a major boost to the troubled Detroit automaker who went through bankruptcy just a few weeks ago.

However, Nissan is not sitting still. It posted on its Twitter page that its electric vehicle, the Leaf, has been rated about 60 percent better than the Volt at 367 mpg. And, in a little dig into the price of the Volt, Nissan added that the Leaf is “affordable”, costing between $25,000 to $33,000. Meanwhile, the Volt is expected to have a manufacturers suggested retail price of about $40,000.

Our take? This could get to be fun. The two world auto giants have started a “Twitter War.” It will be interesting if GM responds via Twitter and then Nissan and back and forth. And will other carmakers jump on Twitter to tout their products?

Maybe everyone should get an account on Twitter -- they could get pertinent car information before anyone else does.

If you've got a short commute, the Leaf and other pure BEVs will be fine. But if you have a longer drive, and still want oustanding fuel economy, the Volt's going to be the way to go.
