We posted earlier this month how the California Air Resources Board called for auto manufacturers to apply a special tint to the windows to keep the interior of cars cool and thus reduce greenhouse emissions. (Yeah, we thought it was crazy, too.)
But automakers quickly jumped into the fray. Toyota, for example, complains that its GPS system is affected because the antenna is mounted inside the vehicle. It said that it will have to redesign its cars so that the antenna is mounted on the roof.
And Chrysler states that it could not apply the tint to the soft sided plastic windows of its 2012 Jeep Wrangler. Why? Apparenly electronics products manufacturers complained that the tint, which uses metal chips to help absorb heat, affects the performance of some electronics products.
Well, the California Air Resources Board decided to exempt vehicles that feature soft sided plastic windows like the Wrangler.
Details can be found at the Detroit News. Our take? We wouldn't be surprised if CARB passes more exemptions.
