Well, the possibility of car dealerships closing is no longer a fear; it is a reality. Chrysler said last week that it intends to close 789 of its dealerships. That’s about 25 percent of the total number of dealers Chrysler has. And General Motors says it will close down 1,100. No doubt questions are swirling around owners' head what happens to their GM or Chrysler warranties.
Well, don't fret. Really. The warranty for your car will still be honored. The federal government is making certain of that. First, you are not tied to the destiny of the dealership from which you bought your car. You may go to other dealerships for repairs. However, you may not get proper service from a nearby dealer who sells and services other cars than GM or Chrysler. Cars are so sophisticated these days that special tools are needed to diagnose problems and make repairs. And such tools used by the service department of a Honda dealership may not be able to diagnose and repair GM and Chrysler cars.
The point is, don’t fret. Even though a massive amount of dealerships are going to be closed, there are still dealerships that will service your Chrysler or GM car. The only problem is you may have to drive the car further to get the service.
